EV Charger Installation Frequently Asked Questions
How much does an EV charger installation cost?
The price depends on the charger you choose, the distance from your electrical supply to the parking space, and the work needed to route and protect the cable. Send us photos of your meter, consumer unit and proposed charger location, and we can prepare a clear quotation. If a site visit is needed, we’ll let you know.
What’s the difference between tethered and untethered?
A tethered charger has a charging lead permanently attached, making it convenient for everyday use. An untethered charger has a socket and uses a separate lead, which you can remove or choose in a length that suits your parking space. The Ohme Home Pro has a 5 m or 8 m attached lead; the Ohme ePod can be used with a separately purchased 10 m Type 2 lead.
How long does installation take?
A straightforward home installation often takes around half a day. A longer cable route, difficult access, groundwork or changes to the electrical supply may take longer. We’ll explain the expected work and timescale in your quotation.
Do I need a new consumer unit?
Usually not. We’ll assess your existing supply and consumer unit and design a suitable, protected circuit for the charger. If an upgrade or additional equipment is needed, we’ll explain it before carrying out the work.
Will a charger overload my home’s electrical supply?
We check the available supply and the property’s electrical demand when designing the installation. Where suitable, a charger with load balancing can reduce its charging rate when the home is using more electricity.
Do I need to contact the electricity network operator?
EV charger installations must be registered with the relevant distribution network operator. Depending on the supply and proposed installation, approval may be needed before work starts. We’ll assess which process applies and explain any effect on the installation date.
Do I need permission if I rent or live in a flat?
You may need written permission from your landlord, freeholder or managing agent, particularly if cables will cross communal areas or the charger will be installed in a shared car park. We can discuss a suitable cable route and provide details of the proposed work to help with your request.
Are EV charger grants available?
Some renters, flat owners, landlords, workplaces and eligible households with on-street parking may qualify for government support. Eligibility depends on the property and the scheme rules. Tell us about your circumstances before ordering: grant-funded work has specific application and installer requirements.
Can I use a cheaper overnight electricity tariff?
Many smart chargers let you schedule charging for off-peak hours. Whether a particular tariff will work for you depends on your electricity supplier, vehicle, charger and tariff rules. We can help you choose a charger with the features you need.
Can an EV charger work with solar panels?
Some chargers can use surplus solar generation, provided the system is suitable and the necessary monitoring equipment is installed. Let us know if you already have solar panels or plan to add them.
What paperwork will I receive?
Once the work is complete, we’ll test the installation and provide the appropriate electrical certification. For notifiable domestic work, we’ll also arrange the applicable Building Regulations notification.

testimonial
Just had an EV charger installed at home by Dane and honestly couldn’t fault the experience. He turned up right on time, was friendly and professional, and took the time to talk me through the whole process before starting.
The installation was done to a really high standard – everything looks neat and tidy, and there was no mess left behind. You can tell he takes real pride in his work. He also showed me how to use the charger properly and answered all my questions without making me feel silly, which I really appreciated.
Overall, a really smooth and stress-free experience from start to finish. Would definitely recommend Dane to anyone looking to get an EV charger fitted.
